PennDOT Launches Heavy Highway Industry Career Days to Connect Students With Transportation Careers

Pennsylvania’s transportation industry is facing the same challenge impacting infrastructure projects across the country: workforce shortages.

To help address that challenge, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) have launched a new initiative designed to introduce students to rewarding careers in the heavy highway and transportation industries. Beginning this fall, schools across Pennsylvania can host Heavy Highway Industry Career Days, providing students with direct exposure to high-demand career pathways and hands-on learning opportunities.

The program is open to Pennsylvania middle schools, high schools, and Career and Technical Centers (CTCs). Participating schools will receive presentations from industry professionals, hands-on demonstrations, and opportunities for students to learn about careers that help build and maintain Pennsylvania’s transportation infrastructure.

The heavy highway industry offers a wide range of career opportunities, including:

  • Construction Inspector
  • Mechanic
  • Laborer
  • Electrician
  • Stonemason
  • Welder
  • Painter
  • Cost Estimator
  • Surveyor

These careers provide pathways to family-sustaining wages while allowing workers to play a direct role in shaping the communities where they live and work.

The initiative also aligns with Pennsylvania’s broader workforce development efforts. Since 2023, the Commonwealth has significantly increased investment in Career and Technical Education (CTE), helping expand access to training programs, modern equipment, and career-readiness opportunities for students across the state. PennDOT’s new Career Day program builds on those investments by helping students understand how classroom learning can translate into real-world careers.

For the transportation industry, workforce development is not just a future concern—it is a present necessity. As infrastructure investments continue throughout Pennsylvania, contractors, consultants, and transportation agencies will need skilled workers to deliver projects safely and efficiently. Programs like Heavy Highway Industry Career Days help create awareness early, allowing students to explore opportunities they may not have previously considered.

At ProRank, we recognize that workforce development and supplier diversity go hand in hand. Strong infrastructure programs require both skilled workers and strong businesses. By exposing students to transportation careers today, Pennsylvania is helping build the workforce that will support tomorrow’s infrastructure projects and economic growth.

ProRank Perspective

The future of transportation depends on more than funding projects—it depends on developing people.

PennDOT’s Heavy Highway Industry Career Day program represents an important investment in Pennsylvania’s next generation of skilled professionals. The earlier students can see themselves in these careers, the stronger the industry’s workforce pipeline will become.
